Using shadows is a great way to create a unique perspective in a photo. As a painter I was taught to look at negative spaces in your composition. I have applied the same skill to photography. What you see is great-But look at the suggestion of another story in the shadows.
In this shot I was in the Maluti mountains on the border between Ficksburg and Lesotho. The unique sandstone makes incredible patterns where the water erodes the rocky plateaus. There were two rocks in the middle of a large circular outcrop. The ocres and hues of the smaller circles caught my eye, forming circles within a circle.
I walked back, sat down, moved, looked, sat down. Then I became curious about the long shadows the two rocks made in the middle. They were flat, so I could stand and balance on top of one of the rocks. To my delight the shadows of myself were intriguing, especially the “canvas” formed by the weathered rock. I played for quite some time with my shadow…
Yup I know, the signs of a loony, but that’s just a normal day in the world of an ever curious soul. Opportunity favours the prepared mind. I love these photos!
